Types of Fish Mounts
There are lots of different kinds of fish mounts, and which one your
taxidermist chooses will depend on the type of fish and the type of
trophy you want. Here a few common types of fish mounts:
- Many warm water fish are mounted by skinning the fish, preserving
the skin, and then mounting the skin over a foam fish body.
Sometimes the body of the fish is filled with a hardening resin.
These types of fish have thick skin and large scales, so they mount
well this way. This type of fish mount uses the most parts of the
fish: in this type of mount, the skin, fins, and even head of the
fish are all used. Some fish commonly mounted with their skin in
this way are bass, crappie, and bream. - Cold water fish are more often mounted over a foam mold of the
fish. The head is often removed and replaced with an artificial
one, although sometimes the original head is used. Fish mounted in
this way include salmon, trout, and other cold water fish. - Most saltwater fish, including sailfish, are recreated from scratch
using entirely man-made materials like fiberglass. These fish are
large, or have greasy bodies, or are hard to skin, and so mounting
them can be difficult. It’s easier (and cheaper) just to recreate
them using a mold, resin, and paint. These fish mounts are more
durable, too.
